Patterned after the hit 1974 film Murder on the Orient Express, director John Guillermin's 1978 motion picture Death on the Nile, with a screenplay by British playwright Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth), was also based on an Agatha Christie mystery novel of the 1930s and featured an all-star cast. And it was also filmed in a lavish retro style that brought the running time to two hours and 20 minutes. To accompany this big-scale production, the filmmakers hired veteran composer Nino Rota, best known for his collaborations with Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2), but also a big record seller with Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968) and a recent Oscar winner for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part II (1974). In the twilight of his career (he died seven months after the film premiered), Rota brought his familiar romantic, lyrical style to his cues for Death on the Nile, which were interspersed with period source music such as Harry Warren's "I Love My Baby (My Baby Loves Me)" and Jacob Gade's "Jalousie." But he could also be playful, notably in the circus-like "Camels and Donkeys," making him an ideal accompanist for a movie that was occasionally winking at itself in its attempt to re-create a long dormant style. Released on the heels of Alec R. Costandinos' 1978 collaboration with Raymond Knehnetsky as Paris Connection, Trocadero Bleu Citron finds the two continuing their collaboration. Knehnetsky again arranges and conducts while Costandinos produces and composes the songs with some assistance from Arthur Simms. The album is in fact a soundtrack to Michael Schock's film Trocadero Bleu Citron, making it yet another conceptual effort by Costandinos. The side one-spanning, 16-minute "Trocadero Suite" is the standout moment here, though the dancefloor favorite "Grooves" also deserves recognition, even if it's far too brief for its own good. 2013 two CD collection. Legendary keyboardist and composer Bob James is one of the major architects of the '70s jazz-funk sound, and is also notorious among a younger generation raised on hip hop. Centered around some soundtrack music that Herbie Hancock wrote for Bill Cosby's Fat Albert cartoon show, Fat Albert Rotunda was Hancock's first full-fledged venture into jazz-funk -- and his last until Head Hunters -- making it a prophetic release. At the same time, it was far different in sound from his later funk ventures, concentrating on a romping, late-'60s-vintage R&B-oriented sound. with frequent horn riffs and great rhythmic comping and complex solos from Hancock's Fender Rhodes electric piano. The syllables of the titles alone -- "Wiggle Waggle," "Fat Mama," "Oh! Oh! Here He Comes" -- have a rhythm and feeling that tell you exactly how this music saunters and swaggers along -- just like the jolly cartoon character. But there is more to this record than fatback funk. There is the haunting, harmonically sophisticated "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" (which ought to become a jazz standard), and the similarly relaxed "Jessica." The sextet on hand is a star-studded bunch, with Joe Henderson in funky and free moods on tenor sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone, Buster Williams on bass, and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums. Only Williams would remain for Hancock's 1977 electric V.S.O.P.: The Quintet album to come. In addition, trumpeter Joe Newman, saxophonist Joe Farrell, guitarist Eric Gale, and drummer Bernard Purdie make guest appearances on two tracks.

Ennio Morricone não pretende mais trabalhar com Tarantino

 

RIO - O compositor e maestro italiano Ennio Morricone não poupou críticas a Quentin Tarantino. De acordo com a revista americana “The Hollywood Reporter”, ele declarou que não tem vontade de trabalhar novamente com o diretor e roteirista. A mais recente colaboração de Morricone em um trabalho de Tarantino pode ser conferida na trilha sonora de “Django livre” (2012), como nas faixas “Sister Sara's theme”, “The braying mule” e “Ancora qui”, esta na voz da cantora italiana Elisa Toffoli.
“Eu não gostaria de trabalhar com ele de novo, em qualquer coisa”, afirmou Morricone, em uma palestra para estudantes de uma universidade em Roma. “Ele disse, no ano passado, que queria trabalhar comigo de novo sempre, desde ‘Bastardos inglórios’, mas eu disse a ele que não poderia, porque ele não me dá tempo suficiente. Então, ele apenas usou uma canção que eu já havia escrito anteriormente”, explicou.
O maestro justifica a sua frustração com o cineasta alegando que Quentin Tarantino utiliza a sua música incoerentemente nos filmes e “não se pode trabalhar com alguém assim”. Ainda segundo o “Hollywood Reporter”, Morricone assistiu a “Django livre”, mas o longa-metragem não o surpreendeu: “Francamente, eu não me importo com isso”. Para o compositor, há “muito sangue”.
Ennio Morricone já foi indicado cinco vezes ao Oscar na categoria de melhor canção original, com os filmes “Cinzas no paraíso” (1978), “A missão” (1986), “Os intocáveis” (1987), “Bugsy” (1991) e “Malena” (2000). Em 2007, conquistou o prêmio honorário da academia de Hollywood pelo conjunto de sua obra. Ele ainda é bastante reconhecido por sua colaboração no fundo musical de “Cinema paradiso” (1988), de Giuseppe Tornatore. A parceira entre Morricone e Tarantino começou em 2003, com a franquia de “Kill Bill”. O compositor também participou da trilha sonora de “Bastardos inglórios” (2009).
